Blac Gurlz Ink – A Full Service Greeting Card Biz!

S. Opara, Owner - Blac Gurlz Ink Greeting Cards & Gifts

Blac Gurlz Ink is the brain child of Spring Opara. I am an American lesbian of African descent, who found that I could not find a greeting card, a print, a calendar, or bumper-sticker… that “authentically represented the diversity” of the LGBT community in general, nor the lesbian community, specifically.

Not being one to complain and a creative cookie, I launched Blac Gurlz Ink Greeting Cards, in December of 2008!

Blac Gurlz Ink is, NOT your ordinary greeting card business. We provide a full range of paper greeting and event items, as “in-stock” inventory or “custom” orders to suit your special occasion needs.  In addition to creating unique and authentic “premium” greeting cards, specifically designed with the LGBT consumer in mind, Blac Gurlz Ink also create gorgeous, 3-dimensional, “handcrafted,” couture greeting cards, for ALL occasions, which are so artistic they appeal to EVERYONE!

“See a Need…Fill a Need” ~Robots (the movie)

The company’s name, Blac Gurlz Ink, was chosen because I and my former business partner are two, tattooed (inked), black lesbians and it was the most logical commonality we shared.  We felt it was important to ensure that everyone knew who was behind the scenes of this endeavor — two lesbians, who have a vision of providing “positive visibility” of the LGBT community, while filling a need.

Premium Greeting Card/Postcard Design

It is Blac Gurlz Ink’s intent to specialize in bringing quality greeting cards to the LGBT consumer, specifically, and to also produce greeting cards and gift items that appeal to ALL consumers!

Remember our motto – NOT your ordinary greeting card business!

We will continuously conduct “Calls for Submissions” and “Model Casting Calls” for future series that we will be creating to keep presenting “fresh,“ “authentic,” and “diverse” designs.

It’s Raining In London Today

Standard
The View from My Window

The View from My Window

The weather during this journey has been simply marvelous but this morning I woke to rain which is so appropriate right now…a cleansing rain.

This has been an amazing  journey for me — the first in my 49 years on this planet where I have taken something on solely FOR ME and the energy around that has been amazing, revealing, surprising and well…all I can do is count my blessings.

Blac Gurlz Ink(BGI) turned 1 yr on Oct. 10th and to already be at a point where we are actually going into overseas markets to promote our greeting cards…well, that usually takes place in years 3 thru 5 of a business!  So for us to be at this point now…I KNOW I am blessed.

It has been hard work, long hours, sleepless nights and tons of prayer to get BGI here and as the Supreme One, I have to thank all of the Angels who have “stepped up to the plate” to actively help me make this dream possible.

Total strangers have been supportive of me and that has been my biggest blessings.  I truly had to surrender to Spirit and to allow those who “needed” to get to me…to get to me…as someone who I consider a good friend said to me…”let us help you…we ARE and CHOOSE to be YOUR Angels.”

So as I sit in my quaint little room (space is premium in these here parts…haha!) I reflect on what I

My Room

My Room

asked Mother/Father God for…to be successful as defined by Me — which has way more to do with the “quality” of My Life than it does the money I make.  I asked for support, to be surrounded by those who are positive and loving influences, to have doors just fly open — haha! and of course to make tons of money so that I can provide for me, those I consider to be My Tribe and to be a good ambassador for my community.

Im off to Paris in a few days and in this moment of reflection…I am utterly content and absolutely grateful for each and every moment that has passed and the exciting ones yet to come…and so it is…

My Tribe

Standard

On any given day I can be surrounded by my Tribe. My Tribe consists of people who we’ve agreed that we are family and are not necessarily related by blood. This group has really supported me through a lot and today I spent some time helping one clean an art studio we share and just chillaxin with my wife and our best friend (also a member of our Tribe).

It made me think tonight about how I can’t wait until we have enough cash to buy the compound we all want and envision in various ways. How we will bring some, cuz not all may be feasible, of the ideas to fruition is a wonderful journey. The collective manifesting of my Tribe has drawn people from all walks of life…entrepreneurs, crafts people, artists, 9-5’er’s, farmers and students…its an amazing collective and what makes it so amazing to me is that we’re all WOMEN!

We currently all live in separate abodes and that’s why we want a compound — separate houses, but on the same land. Grow our own food, run e-businesses, community meals and projects, travel and just thriving is the DREAM! The “static” of the world can be overbearing and I think the reason we’ve all come together is to create that quiet space where we can all breathe.

A residual effect of all of this is — as a collective we are stronger in so many ways that individually would be more of a challenge.

Everyday we get closer and closer to bringing it HOME! As their fearless leader…staying positive and focused is imperative…Lead by Example…yes, Lead by Example.

The SBA, America Recovery Capital (ARC) & You!

Standard

Today I had a meeting with the Asst. District Director of Lender Relations at the SBA…and boy did she give me some good info.  I am passing on the information that she gave me and please in the Spirit of Prosperity, pass it on.  Also, check with your local SBA office to see which banks in your local area are participating in the ARC – America Recovery Capital program and information on other loan options to businesses.  The folks in the San Francisco office were really nice and so, so very helpful, so contact your local offices…they are required to help you.

Side-Note: My friend in Texas was approved for a loan the other day and it was for MORE than she asked for and it was through a lending institution here in California…so they ARE starting to lend and her business is a startup!

Now for the information:

The SBA representative informed me that banks are “slowly” coming onboard, mostly due to the fact that the program is new and the paperwork with the procedures explaining the program are just now being disseminated.  Even though the program is rolling out, many banks that have an existing “conservative” approach to lending are still holding tight, however, the SBA is working with banks to encourage them to embrace the ARC and other new lending program(s).

I asked her what I could do to make a strong case for a loan for Blac Gurlz Ink and here are her suggestions:

  1. Business Plan.  Any business applying for ARC and other loans should have a solid business plan.  She said that I should take my business plan to my local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in order to have them review it.  She indicated that when most banks see that your business plan has been reviewed by the SBDC, they tend to be more inclined to extend the business a loan.  This is a free or nominal fee service…in most cases free.
  2. Ensure you have an up-to-date Cash Flow Projections report included.  Lenders want to know how you plan to repay them and will use your Cash Flow Projections report as one way to ascertain this.
  3. Credit Report. You should include a current credit report with explanations explaining any discrepancies or derogatory information on your report.

Below you will find a list of lenders that participate in the SBA guaranteed loan program.  These lenders have been given authority to make SBA loans to qualified small business applicants.  More information can be found on the SBA website at: www.sba.gov/services/financialassistance/sbaloantopics/index.html.

For general information on qualifying and applying for an SBA American Recovery Capital (ARC) loan, please visit http://www.sba.gov/recovery/arcloanprogram/index.html.

The SBA is offering numerous loan programs to assist small businesses.  It is important to note, though, that the SBA is primarily a guarantor of loans made by private and other institutions and does not offer direct loans to small businesses, except in instances of natural disasters.   SBA’s 7(a) loan program has a maximum loan amount of $2 million dollars, wherein SBA’s maximum exposure is $1.5 million. Thus, if a business receives an SBA guaranteed loan for $2 million, the maximum guaranty to the lender will be $1.5 million.  The Recovery Act did not change the maximum SBA guaranteed amount which remains at $1,500,000.  Again, more information on the various SBA loan programs can be found on the websites noted above.

The Recovery Act also authorized SBA to establish a loan program to provide 100% guarantees on deferred-payment loans to viable small businesses that have a qualifying small business loan and are experiencing immediate financial hardship.  The loans can be up to $35,000, and are to be used to make payments on an existing loan for up to six months.  Repayment would not begin until 12 months after the loan is fully disbursed. This type of loan is commonly referred to as the ARC loan for which a direct link to additional information has also been provided above.

In deciding upon which lender to approach for financing, it is a good idea to begin with a lender with whom you have an established banking relationship.  Feel free to contact any lender on this list, however, for assistance with your small business loan(s).

In addition to the micro lenders listed in the loan information brochure (check with your local SBA for their brochure), contact information for other community express, and/or micro lenders is listed below along with information on the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative :

So, What Are You Selling?

Standard

Have you ever listened to someone intensely tell you about their business and walk away from the conversation still wondering what exactly they do?  Ever have a friend say, nooooo, I produce a product, I’m not in the service industry!  Have you, yourself rambled on trying to convey your business idea and 15 mins into the conversation you realize you’ve lost your listener?

Well, then perhaps you, like the examples I mentioned, would be wise to sit with pen and paper and define a few things in regards to your business.

First, are you selling a product, providing a service or both?  And more importantly what are the benefits and features of your product/service?

Why is this so important you may be asking?  Well, imagine you’re speaking with that investor I mentioned in the first blog, telling her about how you need a truck for your mobile tapas idea.  However, in the conversation you say nothing about the food or the locations the truck will visit, but go on about how you’re going to teach cooking workshops, or that you’re going to buy this quaint storefront on a busy street corner.

It appears from this scenario that you’re providing more of a service (teaching cooking workshops) and why would the investor give you funds for a truck, if you want a quaint storefront.  Your conversations should match your business’ current phase of development and be geared toward the present goal at hand – acquiring funding.  By understanding whether you’re selling a product or service and its related features and benefits is paramount.

It means you KNOW what you’re selling!

So what’s the difference between a “product” and a “service”?  A product can be defined as things that your customers can “touch” and “take away” with them – something tangible.  In the case above, the tapas would be the product.  A service is the sale of “time” and “effort” to the customers.  Cooking workshops could fall into this category, but it can also be a product, in that customers can take their finished treats home.  However, for this discussion I will focus on the “time” spent to “teach” the workshop, which would be a service – an intangible element.

Being clear on what your business sells – products, services or both, is important for YOU to know in order to articulate that to not only your investors, but to your employees as well as yourself.  You are the Commander of your business and if you don’t know, don’t expect others to.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself about your product or service are:

  1. What are the features of your products or services?
  2. What are the benefits of your products or services?
  3. What are you really selling to your customers?
  4. What kind of slogan might you use?
    Women’s Initiative curriculum, session 1, pg. 1-12

Both products and services have features and benefits.  Features can be defined as describing what the product/service has or does.  Benefits are described as what the customer will receive as a result of purchasing your product/service.  Benefits describe the why a customer purchases.

Using the example of a desk chair, some the features could be 1)padded seats, 2)adjustable lumbar pillow and 3)durable casters.  The benefits could be 1)it’s comfortable, 2)durable and 3)great for your back.  Understanding this is one of the key elements in the development of business’ marketing plan.

By writing it out and talking with others – friends, family, even checking out your competition you will be able to adequately define these elements of your business.  And by defining these elements others will know what it is you sell!

For more information on this subject and other business topics, check out the www.sba.gov.  The Small Business Administration has some great tools and templates to assist you in most aspects of growing your business.

Peace & Prosperity to Us All,

Your 30 Second Soundbyte!

Standard

Imagine if you will that you’re on an elevator with an investor and you have exactly the length of the elevator ride to the ground floor to “get that meeting” for your business.  What would you say?  What key elements would you include to get that “meeting?”  Most business owners do not realize that the “pitch” is just to get their foot in the door – the business plan and personality get the check.  So what would YOU say about your business the capture the attention of potential investors?

The ability to articulate what it is that your business does is crucial.  One way to achieve this as a business owner is to have a clear, concise (usually 1 paragraph) pitch about your business.  The key I believe to this is a combination of fact and a whole lot of passion.

Your pitch should include:

  1. Your name and the name of your business.
  2. Your business idea.
  3. The products or services you (will) sell
  4. How long you’ve been in business.

Taken from the Women’s Initiative curriculum.

The ability to effectively articulate what your business does is a signal that you KNOW what you’re doing?

Below you will find the “pitches” (since there were just two I posted their expanded pitches) of two Queens who submitted their businesses for the Biz Bytes Weds.
