Making Our Mark in 2010!

Standard

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope you all have BIG plans for 2010 and that you tackle them with vim and vigor!

I took the last few weeks of ’09 off to reflect on the accomplishments of the passing year and to set realistic goals for Blac Gurlz Ink for 2010!

It is my intent to leave a most memorable and positive mark via Blac Gurlz Ink on the World and I trust that all is in order to continue to make that happen as 2010 unfolds!

In 2009 I was fortunate to have developed some amazing partnerships, create many inspirational networks and to muster up the gumption to bring Blac Gurlz Ink into fruition.

I had so much support and I want to send a shout out to Lahle Wolfe, of About.com – Women in Business for doing a story on us.  I met Lahle via Help A Reporter Out (HARO) and she “tracked” us pretty much at our inception.

Our story: Women in Business Success Story – Blac Gurlz Ink: How an Idea for Greeting Cards Became a Successful Business, was one of the best gifts I received in 2009 — and there were a few!

I look forward to my continued relationship with many of you and to walk…if not but for a short while, with some of you, as we make our way to the lives we wish to lead.

I will be 50 in 2010 and I think that it is going to be another amazing year and so onward I go…to leave my mark — “traveling Light to travel faster” as my Granddaddy would say — haha!

Wishing you all positive abundance and wonder-filled adventure in 2010!

Making it a Great Life!

Black is Fashionable for ALL Occasions!

Winter Wedding designed by Blac Gurlz Ink

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” — and dont forget the white gown?

Some of you may know the above adage as recited by many a bride to be…or at least their mothers or bride’s maid — haha!

Traditionally the wedding ceremony showcases the bride, adorned in the most beautiful of gowns — and in virginal white at that.

Well in 2010 this particular bridal tradition may be turned on its head if the new fashion designers have anything to do with it.  Europe has always been viewed as the heart of the fashion industry.  Continuing to be avant garde and walk outside of the box, their new design concepts are incorporating black as an acceptable option for wedding gowns.  http://w-weddinggowns.com/black-wedding-gowns/

This new train of thought coming out of the fashion houses has determined that “black formal gowns” are suitable for ALL occasions, including weddings and to this end, they are designing fabulous wedding gowns, with intricate and delicate detail, but with a twist — they are introducing “black” — it aint just for funerals anymore — haha!

Beach Wedding Under the Stars designed by Blac Gurlz Ink

So for you brides to be — go ahead and be daring — erase the lines and walk down the aisle as you wish with options galore — wear that “sliming” black  wedding gown you’ve had your eyes on but dare not wear.

We here at Blac Gurlz Ink feel that great minds must think alike — we’ve been designing many of our couture line of wedding cards using “non-traditional” black paper to make the design “POP”!

So when we saw this article we simply smiled and thought to ourselves…yes, great minds DO think alike.

Traditional Lesbian Wedding designed Blac Gurlz Ink

So if you’ve been shy about purchasing our wonderful 3-dimensional wedding cards, dont let that stop you any longer — black is now fashionable for all occasions and Blac Gurlz Ink has a custom couture card for you to mark any wonderful occasion!

Handcrafted Couture Greeting Card

Well I’m back from London and as some of my blogs have stated, it was an amazing journey. For those who are recently becoming acquainted with Blac Gurlz Ink (BGI) — we are a greeting card company that specializes in greeting cards and gift items for same-sex consumers!

A few months back I entered Blac Gurlz Ink  into the Face of Opportunity contest sponsored by StatUpNation & British Airways (BA) by writing an essay as to why it would be beneficial for us to have access to overseas markets.  Thank you again, *Rich & Simon!

The Face of Opportunity contest was created to give businesses here in the states an opportunity to promote their products/services, face-to-face, to overseas markets with British Airways providing FREE air travel to Europe and 1 night hotel accommodations to the winners — Blac Gurlz Ink was one of the winners and off to London I went.

It was an amazing and pleasantly hectic journey as I, along with my business adviser provided via the Small Business Development Center, fine-tuned BGI’s marketing kit.  The end product was an impressive information packet consisting of a letter of introduction, catalog, pricing structure and samples of both our “premium” and “couture” greeting cards.

www.blacgurlzink.com/shop

Upon my arrival in Los Angeles to catch the “chartered” BA flight to London, one of the first people I met was Rich Sloan…who I just had to hug for affording us this opportunity at this stage of our

development!  Most businesses aren’t able to promote to overseas markets until around years 3-5, so for us to be going at year 1 — well I was stoked!  Blac Gurlz Ink turned a year old 3 days prior to the trip and yes it was the best anniversary gift I could have imagined!

I checked in to get my boarding pass and was informed that I had been upgraded to First Class — oh I am so spoiled now and when I travel back to London — yes I’m going back — it will definitely be First Class via British Airways…it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable flights I have taken thus far!

There was networking taking place throughout the first two days of the journey.  On the flight over the winners were all over the plane, making introductions and networking with future partners.  I met several people who I will be in contact with this week to follow-up on discussions we had during the trip.

We were housed at the Radisson Edwardian Heathrow Hotel and had a dinner session with key UK business leaders to give us much-needed information and inspiration to take the countries/cities we had chosen by storm.  They encouraged us to embrace the premise that it is the small to medium business owner who will be key to stimulating the economies of many nations and they wanted us to go with confidence in our plans for doing just that.

I understood from the outset that BGI was on a “market development” venture this time out.  I know that there is a niche for our products and my goal while in London was to develop markets for our greeting products.

I had mailed out the marketing kits out prior to my leaving, so once I hit London proper I was off to follow-up with those who had received the kits.

lesbianwed

Handcrated Couture Greeting Card

They were more than receptive and other avenues were found and developed, as well, as I stopped in any shop that carried greeting cards and introduced myself and BGI’s greeting products to them.

There are three contacts I found that will be most beneficial in the promotion of Blac Gurlz Ink to international markets:

American Embassy **Commercial Services Division.  I contacted Mr. Rod Hirsch in the Oakland branch of this division and he coordinated a meeting for me with his UK counterpart, Sara Jones, who I will be working with to promote BGI within London.  The Commercial Services Division has been tasked to assist US businesses seeking to conduct business overseas in doing so.  They will field your promotion kits to various distributors and retailers within your industry, coordinate face-to-face meeting with you and bona-fide businesses who WANT to do business with you — meetings can be held at the American Embassy or if the business wants you to visit them at their sites, an Embassy representative will accompany you.  All contracts and coordination thereof are between the respective businesses. The Commercial Services Division charges a fee for their assistance, however, it is often worth it to a business to KNOW for certain that those at the meeting are there to seal the deal!

Sara and I met and she provided me with some great information.  She was able to see our greeting cards first hand and said that she is looking forward to working with me.  She commented, of our couture cards, that currently there is nothing on the market like it for even mainstream consumers — she was quite impressed with our work!  Sara also kept some of the samples and our marketing kit information, so that she could show them to her colleagues working in the gifting industry and so that she will have them when Im ready to launch that phase in our strategic marketing plan! I told ya’ll I was taking this baby GLOBAL! hahaha!  **http://www.buyusa.gov/uk/en/

UK Trade & Investment. ***UK Trade & Investment – UKTI was one of the presenters during our dinner session and I spoke with Mr. Don Bolessa afterwards to see what UKTI could do to assist us. UKTI’s primary function is to assist in partnering businesses together in order to enhance cross-promotional/distribution of their products or services.  They are a department of the UK government that is responsible for the Global Partnership program.  They provide research, consulting and logistic services to businesses so that they have a better picture of their industries within the European markets.  And as any business owner knows — knowledge is power!  ***http://www.ukinvest.gov.uk/Feature/4040582/en-GB.html

The third organization is for anyone who is ready to take the whole kit and kaboodle overseas to London — relocation!

Think London.  Jill Scott, Business Development Associate, of Think London, another presenter at the Welcome Reception at LAX, provided information that I think any business owner wanting to open an office in London would find useful. Think London is an organization that offers FREE services to businesses who want to do business in London.  They coordinate and advise on the detailed aspects of starting a business, expanding your business or relocating your business to London…and did I mention that their services are FREE!  http://www.thinklondon.com/how_we_help/index.html

So in summation everyone — it was a most productive trip based on the goals I had set prior to leaving.  If I had not won this contest who knows how long it would have taken me to fall upon such gems of information and their respective organizations!  haha!  When I return to London, the first part of 2010, I will be going to sign contracts and to me that would not have been possible if not for the foresight of organizations such as StartUpNation and British Airways!

Now if you’re a skeptic who thought that no one small wins big in these types of contests, I say to you — the Universe will conspire to make your dreams come true — the question is will you dare to dream of the Impossible?  I dream BIG! haha!

If you have questions that you think I might be able to answer, feel free to leave a comment and I will definitely get back to you.

One Love and Spreading it Around the World…

Supreme One Out…fade to work…hahaha!

Sunday started early for me…most of you were sound asleep…ahh, thinking of my own bed at home…haha!

I decided to grab my backpack, music, a bit of cash, my Oyster card and a map of the Underground and head out to see more of London.  My destination — The London Bridge.  Tidbit of info on the London Bridge…it’s now in *Lake Havasu City, Arizona — so we yanks can enjoy it if we so choose…haha!

I entered the Underground at Notting Hill Gate and headed for Oxford Circus then jumped on the Victoria Line, I believe (corrections are welcomed from my London friends) and ended up at Angel Station.  Realizing I was close to Goswell Rd, I popped in to see one of Blac Gurlz Ink’s Myspace friends, Damien Voodoo, of London Tattoo.  The shop was closed, however a gent I believe to be the owner — he sported some amazing ink work, was kind enough to inform me that Damien was off til next week and that he would tell him that I dropped by…”Hey Damien…maybe next trip!”

Angel Station

Angel Station

Damien does some wonderful ink work, himself, that you can see on his Myspace page and had he been around, I would have thought seriously about getting a tattoo of “Blac Gurlz Ink” etched right under my Tribal Wedding Wings on my left arm..haha! Bet you all want to know that story right? hahaha! Ahh yet another blog…but I digress.

London Tattoo is just a short walk from Angel Station so I walked back to the station and boarded a #43 to the London Bridge.  Getting off at the stop just prior to going over the bridge I decided to take the Sugar Quay walking path along the river and ended up at the Tower of London which is currently exhibiting the interesting life of Henry the 8th…and yes I’m singing the Herman’s Hermits’ song AND dating myself! haha!

River path view

River path view

I dont know how other countries are handling the supposed economic shift of 2008 but I think London will be just fine. The area was packed with tourists from all over the world and the transformation this city has gone through since my last visit in 1993, is simply amazing!  Im certain they will be okay.

The Tower of London exhibit hall has a new state of the art theater, food vendors and the gift shop has grown in the quaint little cottage in which it’s housed all while the surrounding area is under-going construction, just like most of London.

Many buildings are patiently awaiting their new millennium make-over and I commend the British government on their endeavor to combine the modern with the existing, post-modern architecture which gives London its charm!200811260029

Now without further ado…my day’s photos…and dont worry, not as many as the Portabello Market blog…haha!

A London Travel Tip:  The Oyster card is good if you’re going to use both the Underground and bus systems.  However, if you dont mind riding the buses mostly — which allow you to see way more than the Underground but will take a tad bit more time due to construction and the “diversions” (detours for us Americans…haha) then opt for $3.80 daily bus/tram passes…way better than the Oyster card as you have to load the Oyster card by calculating your trips…the daily bus pass is good for 24 hrs from time of purchase…you get my drift!

Portobello Market West London – My Pictorial Essay

Standard

Portobello Market in West London is one of the most famous street markets in the world. It is a populart destination for Londoners and tourists alike.

Portobello Road goes straight through the heart of Notting Hill, the trendy area of London made famous by the film. Indeed, so famous is the film Notting Hill that I find scarcely a week goes by without someone or other asking me about the various set locations: the blue door, the travel bookshop, the garden fence and so on.

So why do they ask me? Well, because I work on the market – so now you know that the information here is straight from the ‘orses mouf, as the cockneys say – actually I’m really quite posh, but I didn’t want to dispell your image of what a market trader is like!

Portobello Market takes up most of what is actually more properly called Portobello Road, it stretches for around two miles, although on a crowded saturday afternoon it takes quite a while to walk from end to end.

OMGoodness! London NEVER Sleeps!

Standard
Yvonne & Nikki - My Intl Tribe!

Yvonne & Nikki - My Intl Tribe!

After working the week making contacts and with more meetings scheduled on Monday the last thing I wanted was to be “stuck” in my room on a Friday night…especially in this wonderful city.  I had made a few calls to friends of  friends, earlier, to touch bases and to ask what London had to offer on a Friday night — especially for a lesbian from the states and voila Yvonne & Nikki came to my rescue and made themselves available to show me around the *SoHo District!

So after a much needed nap, I showered got dressed and headed for the Notting Hill Gate Underground…destination — the McDonald’s outside of Tottenham Court Road to connect with Yvonne & Nikki.  London is Europe’s New York and I was totally surprised and blown away to see that at 11pm on a Friday night the streets were filled with tourists, and natives a like, heading out looking to let their hair down and to shake what their mamas gave them.

The Notting Hill Gate Underground is only a few blocks from my hotel and I felt like a pro welding my pounds to purchase an “Oyster” card so that getting around on public transportation would be a bit easier.  If I thought that the pubs, cafes and shops near where I am staying were full…Tottenham Court Road gave that an entirely new meaning as it was jammed packed with folks hustling to get to their destinations — all while dodging double-decker buses and the infamous London cabbies!

I didnt have to wait long as Yvonne & Nikki arrived immediately and knew who I was in an instant — Im sure that because Yvonne and I are Facebook friends it helped her to recognize me…haha!

As we all said our howdy do’s we headed off to the Century, a members only club, for drinks and a bit to eat before taking on the lines of the clubs.  I was greeted with a kiss on both cheeks (a custom here) by Yvonne’s  friends – the club’s owner, who though living in a second level flat had recently purchased a horse — yes the saddle me up and once around the glen type…haha!  It was the most hilarious conversation around where the horse is being housed and nooo…it is not in his flat — though some of his friends have actually implied that! And her friend Javier Du Frutos, a most noted choreographer who’s take on Diaghilev’s work has landed him the auspicious title of “the mischief maker” in the daily newspapers! Go Javier! haha! **there’s a link below if you want to read the juicy tidbits!

The Century club is a gorgeous 4 story venue and sorry…since its a members club…no photos…but take my word for it…we totally need something like this in California…posh and downright fabulous!

Yvonne, herself,  is a club promoter and knows everyone! Every 50 feet, or so, we were either being kissed on the cheek as introductions were made or loud yells of “Yvonne” were heard over the crowd’s giggles and conversations streaming through the night’s air.  The woman is famous for sure…and I personally like how she views the whole club movement in our “gay” community…but that’s another blog…haha!

WestSide Baby! Haha!

WestSide Baby! Haha!

After the Century we headed to the club via Chinatown and the area was still growing with party-goers vying for positions in club lines, tempting the doorman to put their names on the guests’ list and just a carnival atmosphere in general.

Once inside I met the club’s DJ for the night, Abbey, another friend of Yvonne’s who will be visiting California soon and who is truly a mixologist — the woman had us bumping and I cant wait for her to hit the states so that I can introduce her to some of my DJ’s friends.

Thoroughly delighted, we headed off to Balans, a SoHo eatery with the most delicious raspberry cheese cake I have ever tasted, to have coffee and to talk, as Yvonne & Nikki brought me up-to-date on “cockney” slang. Nikki is so cute…she says I need a crash course in British slang — probably so I wont stick out like the average tourist.  haha! And I agree, especially after I ordered a “cucumber sausage”  — which was actually a “cumberland sausage” — and then went on to ask…”what’s the difference between a “quid” and a “pound”” — it was late ya’ll…haha!

As we walked the streets of SoHo at about 4am to get me to my bus back to the hotel…people were still pouring into the district.  Cabbies zipping by shuttling folks to more locales and the “jitney” buggies pulling intoxicated lovers down Oxford Street and beyond made me realize that this city never sleeps…and for an insomniac like me…that’s a good thing.  I am so looking forward to my next trip here and hanging with Yvonne & Nikki.  Im building my international Tribe and well…Life is Good!
